Application procedure

Applicants are requested to submit proposals through the web-based "J-PARC proposal submission system" .

The principal investigator is requested to complete the user registration as follows before proceeding to the proposal application.

  1. Access"J-PARC proposal submission system" and make a registration as a new user.
  2. USER ID and a temporary password will be informed to you by e-mail. Please login with those information and change the password of your choice.
  3. Please fill the application form for which you wish to apply after login process.

The users who have once submitted proposal through this proposal submission system can use the previously submitted data as the base of new proposal.
Once data transfer of the application form is completed without any trouble, the notice of submission acceptance is sent to you by E-mail. Please confirm your submission with the e-mail message.
The OS and browsers guaranteed by the gJ-PARC proposal application systemh are as follows:
OS Browsers
Windows XP,vista Internet Explorer 6 or 7
Mac OSX, Leopard Firefox 2ASafari 2
If you come across any problem in the J-PARC proposal application system or are using different OS and browsers from those listed above, please contact the J-PARC Center Users Office.

Proposal review system

All nonproprietary proposals are reviewed and ranked by the Neutron/Muon Program Review Committee which is organized under the MLF advisory board. Some sub-committees will be also organized under both neutron and muon Program Review Committees to assess proposals in the specialized viewpoints. The list of sub-committees is given below.

List of sub-committees for the Neutron Science Program Review Committee
Category Name of sectional committee
P1 Crystal structure
P2 Liquid and Non-crystalline
P3 Nanostructured materials
P4 Biomaterial
P5 Magnetic and strongly correlated electronic materials
P6 Elementary physics, Nuclear physics
P7 Industrial application
P8 Research and Development

List of sub-committees for the Muon Science Program Review Committee
Category Name of sectional committee
Q1 Magnetic and strongly correlated electronic materials
Q2 Chemical physics and General science
The principal investigator wishing to apply for the review field of gIndustrial applications (P7)h must belong to a private company. Users wishing to apply for the gIndustrial applications (P7)h are recommended to consult the experimental plan with MLF prior to submitting proposals. [Contact for technical consultation]

The review of urgent proposals will be conducted by the director of MLF division in cooperation with the chairperson of the MLF-PRC and the person responsible for the instrument which will be used for the proposed experiment. The review result will be approved by the director of the J-PARC center and notified to the principal investigator of the proposal.
After completion of the experiment, the principal investigator of the urgent proposal must submit an experimental report to the MLF-PRC.
The principal investigator wishing to apply for the review field of gIndustrial applications (P7)h must belong to a private company. Users wishing to apply for the gIndustrial applications (P7)h are recommended to consult the experimental plan with MLF prior to submitting proposals.

The review of rapid access proposals will be conducted by the E-mail based discussion among members of MLF-PRC.
After completion of the experiment, the principal investigator of the rapid access proposal must submit an experimental report of the experiment to the MLF-PRC.

Evaluation criteria

The submitted proposals are assessed and selected on the following criteria:
  • scientific significance
  • industrial applications
  • social merit
  • technical feasibility
  • capability of the experimental group
  • reasons for why the requested MLF instrument is required for the proposed experiment
  • educational merit
  • promotion of new research field, encouragement of first-time users
For the project use proposals, the following viewpoints will be included in the evaluation criteria; necessity and justification of the project use, the feasibility of project members.
For the instrument use proposals, the following viewpoints will be included in the evaluation criteria; capabilities of the instrument group for improving performance of the instrument, appropriateness of budget profile, justification of the cutting-edge research and development.

Safety review

Safety aspects of all proposals will be reviewed by a safety review team of Materials and Life Science Division of the J-PARC center.

Information of experimental sample(s)

Please fill the chemical form of the experimental sample(s) in the application form for the safety review in view of chemical and radiation safety by the J-PARC center.

At present, the following temporal rules are applied in MLF;

  1. the powder sample must be sealed in a vanadium cell,
  2. A liquid sample or the sample contained in a capillary with a solution/solvent must be checked by the radiation control office of J-PARC for approval of use before use.
Therefore, the users planning to use the sample cell or capillary are requested to describe its information so that the consultation process starts smoothly.
