1) A mercury target is irradiated with high intensity proton beam from an accelerator.

2) The protons collide with mercury nuclei. They are broken down and emits very fast neutrons.

3) The neutrons are reflected back with a reflector to a moderator.

4) The neutrons get slower and slower with colliding with hydrogen in the moderator.

5) The slow neutrons are extracted to an experiment apparatus.
