Re : Notification of Cancelation of Assigned Beamtime to the End of July 2013 due to the Accident at the Hadron Experimental Facility, J-PARC

    Dear J-PARC Users,

I would like to convey to you all my deepest apologies for the accident that occurred at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility on 23 May 2013 and our failure to prevent some users and workers from being exposed to higher-than-normal levels of radiation.

As I notified you on May 29 2013, all the J-PARC facilities have been shutdown since the accident. A full investigation of the cause of the accident is now underway along with the complete review of safety practices and emergency procedures at all J-PARC facilities. Our first priority is to restore public trust in the facility by developing and implementing measures to prevent the reoccurrence of an accident and to provide a safe experimental environment for users and workers.

Consequently, we have decided to cancel all assigned beamtime up until the end of July 2013 for users of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) and the Neutrino Experimental Facility.

The operating schedule beyond July is uncertain at this point and will be announced as soon as it becomes clear.

I would like to express my sincere apologies for the inconvenience and disruption that these circumstances will cause. I thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.

    Yours sincerely,

    Yujiro Ikeda
    Director
    J-PARC Center
