[Particle and Nuclear Physics Division] by Takeshi KOMATSUBARA --------------------------------------------------------------------- HADRON EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY RESTARTED THE USER OPERATION Hadron Experimental Facility (HEF) restarted the user operation at 11:03 on 24th April, 2015. As a result, all of the facilities are normally operated in J-PARC. After the accident on 23rd May, 2013, preventive measures against recurrence of similar accidents in both hardware and software aspects were implemented. Renovation works in HEF were completed in January 2015; they were reviewed by external expert panels and inspected by local governments, and the measures to prevent recurrence were reported to the governor of Ibaraki Prefecture and the mayor of Tokai village. Briefing sessions to explain to local residents were held on 3rd, 4th and 5th of April. The inspection under law was conducted, and the certificate was issued on 20th. We would like to be grateful for your supports, and appreciate your patience during the two years. We are going to continue safety operation of the facilities, and expect excellent scientific outcomes by working with you closely. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. [Materials and Life Science Division] by Masatoshi FUTAKAWA --------------------------------------------------------------------- 500KW PROTON PULSE PRODUCES THE HIGHEST NEUTRON BEAM BY COUPLED MODERATOR IN THE WORLD The beam power of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) has reached at 500 kW, a half of our final goal of 1MW, at 11:00 on 15th April. Our coupled moderator has the highest efficiency to produce neutron beam in the world. Currently it has achieved the most intense neutron beam per one shot, which will be the world record. We had many encouraging messages about the great news from users to MLF. UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN DUE TO THE PROBLEM OF TARGET VESSEL Unfortunately, we have forced to stop the MLF user operation due to the problem on the target vessel since 30th April. We have been working to diagnose the source of the problem at the water cooling system in the target and we found that the best we can do is to replace the target now, which was originally scheduled in this summer. We are sorry for that we have to cancel the user operation of MLF for the period originally planned before the summer shutdown. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and would deeply appreciate your understanding. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Editorial Board: Toshifumi TSUKAMOTO (Chair): toshifumi.tsukamoto@kek.jp Kaoru SHIBATA: shibata.kaoru@ jaea.go.jp Takashi ITO: itou.takashi@jaea.go.jp Dick MISCHKE (English Editor): mischke@triumf.ca Junko BEANBLOSSOM (Secretary): beanblossom.junko@jaea.go.jp ++++++++++++++++End of Letter++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
