œA great progress in unveiling mysteries of neutrino at the T2K experiment!
The T2K experiment, of which the primary purpose is to study physical characteristics of neutrino, has observed 11 candidate events that muon neutrino appears to be electron neutrino in the data collected before June 2012. The presentation at the 25th International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics in Kyoto received much attention from the world. The T2K group continues their efforts to increase statistical accuracy of their finding.

œAccelerator-Driven Transmutation Technology at J-PARC
The earthquake and tsunami disasters on March 11, 2011 and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear disaster had a big impact to the world. Regardless of the fate of existing nuclear power plants, it is our big concern how we can manage high-level nuclear waste including long-lived nuclides from the nuclear power plants. Accelerator-driven transmutation technology would be one possibility to reduce this concern. As the phase II project, J-PARC is planning to build an experimental facility for studying the bases of this technology. An interview of the project leader, Dr. Oigawa, about the project was broadcasted on a national television network on June 17th.

œAll user programs at J-PARC have been resumed!
Eventually the beam delivery for users of the Hadron Experimental facility was resumed June 9. Many users who waited for the resuming for long time after the disaster in March 2011 continued working hard day and night.

œCollaboration Agreement with ESS in Sweden
JAEA and KEK signed a collaboration agreement with the European Spallation Source (ESS) located in Lund, Sweden. As part of the commemoration, ESS had a walking event for 2 weeks. About 130 ESS staff walked approximately 5,000 km in total that corresponded to the distance between Lund and J-PARC.

œInternational Advisory Committee on New Imaging Instrument at BL22
The International Advisory Committee on BL22 (Neutron imaging with pulsed neutrons) at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility 9MLF) was held from May 30th to June 1st at IBARAKI Quantum Beam Research Center in Tokai. BL22 will be the first dedicated instrument to take an image with pulsed neutrons in J-PARC. The instrument can observe the internal structure of a sample with the information of element composition and distribution and magnetic field with high precision. BL22 would be appreciated by many researchers from various fields of science.
