An airport bus seems to be the most reasonable choice to come to Mito directly from both airports. The fare is 3,000 yen (from Narita international airport) and 3,500 yen (from Haneda/Tokyo international airport).
The bus stop "Mito station south exit" is very close to the conference venue.

There are no direct line from both Haneda/Narita airport to Mito. Transfer(s) in Tokyo area are needed to get JR (Japan Railway) Joban line at Ueno station. Ueno is one of major intercity rail terminals in Tokyo area.
JR Joban line limited express train will take you to mito in 75 minutes from Ueno station.

Along Yamanote-line between Hamamatsucyo/Tokyo to Ueno, there is Akihabara, where is very famous for its electronics shops and is recognized as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture.
From Narita airport to Ueno
Keisei Skyliner provides non-stop service to JR Nippori station, which offers easy connection onto JR lines. From Nippori, JR Yamanote line takes you to Ueno in 4 minutes. Yamanote-line is a loop line and runs at intervals of 3-4 minutes.
After Nippori, Skyliner stops at Keisei-Ueno station. It requests 6-7 minutes walk to transfer between there, though the station is located next to JR Ueno station.
As an option, JR Narita Express (a train leaves every 30-60 minutes from the airport) take you to Tokyo station, big rail terminal in Tokyo area, from Narita airport terminal in 60-65 min.
Transfer to Yamanote-line that goes to Ueno in 6-7 minutes at Tokyo station.

Shinagawa station is also available as transfer station from Narita Express to Yamanote-line for Tokyo and Ueno. It takes some more time (20min.) and extra money (170 yen) but it is much easier than that at Tokyo station.

From Haneda airport (AKA Tokyo International Airport) to Ueno
Take Tokyo monorail to Hamamatsucho. Transfer to JR Keihintohoku-line or JR Yamanote-line, which run side by side, for Ueno there. These lines run at intervals of 3-4 minutes, take you to Ueno in 9 minutes.
