J-PARC Access Map
J-PARC is being constructed at the Tokai site of Japan Atomic Energy Agency, JAEA. Tokai is located at 100km northeast of Tokyo and 70km north of the Tokyo-Narita International Airport. It takes about 1 hour from Tokyo-Narita International Airport to Tokyo by express train and about 2 hours and 40 minutes from Tokyo to Tokai by limited express train of JR (Japan Railway). It also takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes from Tokyo-Narita International Airport to Tokai by express bus.
High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, KEK, is in Tsukuba, which is in the west of Tsuchiura, and Tokai is located at 50km northeast of KEK. It takes 80 minutes to drive from KEK to Tokai.
Tokai is adjacent to Mito, which is the largest city in Ibaraki Prefecture (and the seat of the prefectural government) and has many historic spots. Tokai, Mito, Tsuchiura and Tsukuba all belong to Ibaraki Prefecture; Tokyo-Narita International Airport belongs to Chiba Prefecture in the south of Ibaraki.
