The J-PARC accelerator complex consists of 3 accelerators, a linear accelerator, a rapid cycle synchrotron (RCS, 3GeV) and a 50 GeV (Max) synchrotron. Each accelerator provides the experimental faculties (materials and life science, hadron physics, neutrinos, transmutation) with a high intensity beam. The secondary particles, such as neutrons, mesons as well as neutrinos from these mesons, are produced by bombarding a target with an intense proton beam. |

BEAM COMMISSIONING OF MR AND MLF WAS STARTED (J-PARC Project Newsletter No.33, July 2008) -2008.8.4-
An effort to extract the beam from the 3 GeV ring to the 50 GeV ring started during the week of May 19th. On the 20th, a circulation of the beam in the 50 GeV ring was successfully achieved. Later, on May 22nd, the beam was captured by the RF and, then, extracted outside the ring. During the test period in May and June, the beam energy remained as 3 GeV (no accelerations). This was a "planned" action. The acceleration of the beam to 30 GeV is scheduled in December of this year. The entire team was satisfied by the test results that have been obtained in May and June, since we were able to confirm that many different elements from upstream to downstream of the accelerator system worked very successfully, though they are extremely complex.
Birth of Pulsed Neutrons in J-PARC (J-PARC Newsletter Special Issue(Birth of neutrons)-2008/5/30-)
On May 30th, 2008. At 14:25, a shot of 3GeV protons from RCS (3 GeV synchrotron) was injected to the mercury target at MLF.

MR: Successful injection of 3GeV proton beam, RF captured and extraction
At 22:27 of May 22nd 2008, the 3 GeV proton beams from the RCS (3GeV proton synchrotron) were successfully injected into the Main Ring (50GeV proton synchrotron). The beam was captured by RF and extracted to the beam dump after 1000 turns. The day after, the beam storage time was extended up to 1 second. It is the major milestone for the J-PARC. The next step is to accelerate beams to 30GeV (Phase I) and to extract beams to the experimental holes, which will start in the end of this year. (by nh 2008.5.27) |
