▥ Situation immediately after East Japan Great Earthquake
Note #2 March 18, 2011
- On the 17th of March we inspected inside. We were very afraid for this late inspection, since the earthquake was on the 11th of March. However, inside was very calm and no significant damages were observed. Even no cracks were seen. Inside Linac and also inside the neutrino detector area, there was about 1cm in depth of water. There are no waters for other places. All the accelerators look very healthy by glancing from outside, though detailed inspection is definitely needed. For example, we were not sure if ceramic chambers have any cracks, etc. etc. Furthermore, all experimental areas, MLF, hadron and neutrino were, to a first order approximation, fine, again, from a brief glance alone. Toward the extension direction of the hadron hall the outer wall was slipped and this is a dangerous situation. We will perform detailed inspection after lights are on, since no electricity is available at this moment for the J-PARC.
- Outside areas were severely damaged. For example, one major and one minor electric power supplies were leaning. In addition, in the MLF area an experimental hall was extended to outside the main bulging. There, the outside experimental floor was about 30 cm dropped vertically as compared to the main building. Therefore, experimental devices were leaning and damaged. Neutron target was shaken significantly with significant cracks.
- Roads and ground surfaces were wound or dropped by 30 cm to 1 meter in many places.
- We have two major power supplies. One was in a reasonable shape and can be used within a few days. However, the other power supply has a significant problem. We use the first one and also, by borrowing a healthy power from the campus, we will start, within a week, to have lights inside the tunnel. Also, we will start to function various motors to remove water in the linac and neutrino areas and also to dry all the accelerator areas.
- Water is not yet available in Tokai.
- The entire impression is that we are confident to recover the machine within reasonable time, since almost all elements looked the same as they were before the earthquake, though we will have many many things to do. We have to start testing one equipment to the other carefully, even if it takes time.

Message from J-PARC Director Shoji Nagamiya (March 14, 10:30 am, 2011)
Today, we had a meeting on J-PARC. Please keep in mind the followings:
- Please do not come to enter the J-PARC area for a while. For the coming three days the place is totally out of service.
- We shall inform you the status after things may clear up. Until that time, the J-PARC is closed.
- Fortunately, no injuries are observed for J-PARC related persons and no radiation problems have happened. Also, all the buildings seen from outside are in good shape without any effects of Tsunami, though surrounding roads are severely damaged.
- Details will be informed later.

Note #1 March 12-13, 2011 (Three messages were combined)
- You might be worrying a big earthquake effect in Japan. In so far, we have not heard anyone in and around the J-PARC were injured or dead. This is the first thing that I worried, but I was very much relieved by hearing it. We were lucky, since in the next power generator area outside the campus, four people were unfortunately dead.
- When the earthquake came, I was in Tsukuba. On the next day on March 12, I drove to Tokai to see J-PARC. At least, there were no Tsunami effects on J-PARC. Buildings were very strong so that from outside there were no significant damages for all buildings, whereas many roads around the J-PARC were severely damaged. In Linac and MLF, big gaps of 20-50 cm were detected, primarily since the road is dropped, whereas J-PARC buildings remain as they were.
- We designed to tolerate up to 10 meter of Tsunami. This time, very fortunately lower than this limit. Neighbors (north of J-PARC) had a significant Tsunami effect, though.
- The beam was on when this big Earthquake hit. We immediately stopped the beam. There were not hints that magnets fell down.
- All roads from KEK to Tokai were damaged, in particular, freeway, trains, etc. Accesses are therefore very limited. Today I used normal road from my house to J-PARC. It took over 7 hours for the round trip (usually about two or two and a half hours using freeway)
- Since the accelerator is very delicate one, we all would like to start to study it from Monday, next week. I do not know how long it deos take to recover to the original shape.
- For non-Japanese people working at J-PARC, all were safely transferred to either Tsukuba, Tokyo and the Airport since although everyone is fine, the foods, electricity, water, etc. are limited.
PS Note:
The J-PARC is located on the seaside where a big Tsunami came. At the north side of J-PARC, a big parking lot exists and, there, over 200 cars were parking. They are brand new cars fabricated by Nissan and waiting for export. All the car were completely smashed immediately after the big Tsunami came. I was therefore very afraid for J-PARC. I went there on the next day and found that the damage was minimal.

▥ Operation Plan for J-PARC
April 6, 2011
Because of the East Japan Great Earthquake, J-PARC was heavily damaged in the facilities and devices therein.
We are now trying to grasp the damage situation of each device, unfortunately however, it seems that a considerably long time period would be necessary to resume operations.
Therefore, we need to review our operation plan for FY2011. At the present moment, it has not been decided yet for not being able to predict how long it will take to restore the facilities.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience you have been put to. All the parties concerned are now undertaking the restoration of the facilities with the utmost energy. Your kind understanding and cooperation would be much appreciated.
As soon as the operation plan for FY2011 will be determined, we will inform you of it through our webpage.
Thank you,

▥ Notice of Starting Test Run of Beams in J-PARC
December 9, 2011
We would like to inform you that we will start a test run of the beam for accelerators from December 9, 2011, while we are in the course of restoration.
If there would be no problem found in devices or equipment after the test, we will plan to offer the use of our facility for the period about two months in FY 2012, as described in "J-PARC Recovery Schedule (Designed on May 20, 2011)".
Schedule of the test run for beam of accelerators:
Dec. 9 (Fri.): Starting test run of the beam for LINAC
Dec. 18 (Sun.): Starting test run of the beam for RCS (3 GeV synchrotron)
Dec. 22 (Thu.): Starting test run of the beam for MR (50 GeV synchrotron)
Please note that the above schedule may be changed according to the progress of the test.
